The dying Hazrat Umar finding no one as his successor among his associates appointed a board of Six Elector to choose his successor , they were Ali, Uthman, Abdul Rehman Bin Auf, Zubair , Saad Bin Abi Waqas and Talha , further he order to complete the process within three days lest people and state resort to unrest & sedition. , finally after a harsh & nerves breaking dialogue & debate the rest of four members in the race retired & the final candidates reduced to only two that was Ali & Uthman representing two Qureshi leading fractions Hashmid & Ummayad respectively both had the Equal Claim of caliphate while the Abdul Rehaman relinquish himself from the nominee & became the principle umpire of the whole Election Process , he had a thorough negotiation with prophet companions ,the leading citizen of the Madina & of the province who were visiting the capital after the pilgrimage . where as Talha, Zubair & Saad retired in favor of Uthman ,thus the Abdul Rehman decalred Uthman as the successor of Umar & the third orthodox caliph of Faithfull’s . for the moment Ali hesitated ,But when Abdul Rehaman reminded him to abide by his decision , he too rushed towards & paid homage to Uthman .
THUS WAS THE THIRD CALIPH ELECTED
However owing to the tragic events of later year of Uthman Caliphate , his election became much controversial causing dissention & disunity ,schism & sedition during subsequent ages of Islamic History
The Question arises , why did People favored Uthman over Ali , some argue briefly the Great Age of Uthman nearly seventy at the time of his election , and Arab Prefer Age to Youth as Ali was at that time in his Mid forties ,what is more people expected that Uthman wouldn’t live long & then Ali would have a fair Chance to rule after his death
Secondly Uthman was very popular among the people on account of his Munificence or Generosity , his service to Islam & his close relationship with prophet (PBUH) being the husband of his two daughters hence entitled “Dhu-I –Narayan” further an unexpressed sentiments did exist among his subjects who sought relief in form his mild nature from the stern & stick days of his predecessors Umar & Abu Bakar.
No one among Muslim or non muslim critics doubted the piety & the service of Hazrat Uthman Bin Affan to the ISLAM during the time of Prophet(PBUH) and after his death when he assumed the leadership of Faithfull’s as the Third orthodox caliphs , during his 12 year reign the Muslim empire extended across Egypt to the West & all over the Persia to the East & to the Caspian Sea to the North including present Central Asian states Turkmenistan , Azerbaijan & Kazakhstan
